As many of you know, I have been working on remodeling some spaces around my house over the past year. One of the biggest projects I’ve tackled so far is my kitchen. My kitchen was terrible for a multitude of reasons.
- Very outdated counters and cabinetry
- Appliances outdated and filthy
- Soft spots in floor from past water damage
- Laundry room was a make shift closet
- Lots of unused, unutilized space
- White tile ceilings. You know, the cheap,
ugly*ahem* “quirky” ones (as my girlfriends call them).
My goal was to clean it up! Ugh, it was gross. Mouse droppings. Grime. Yuck. Why did I buy this place? I knew it was a diamond in the rough. This is my first investment property. It is beautiful two story cottage duplex downtown in walking distance to great eats and entertainment. I fell in love with the upstairs unit and very much wanted to live there, but I bought it with a lovely seven year tenant that I wanted to keep a while, so downstairs yucky unit it was.
I have slowly painted the interior and conquered some little and some big projects around the house with the help of friends and my significant other. If you want to follow the progress, please subscribe! And without further ado, here are the BEFORE pictures of the poor kitchen:
So just to recap and help you out with what you are seeing here in photo #1… 1. That old paint is over wallpaper. yes. not fun. 2. The cabinets are filthy and so is everything 3. Those counters are a dusty rose color AND they extend to the back-splash 4. Did you see those appliances? 5. Or that sink? 6. Or that makeshift closet which contains the washer and dryer? 7. That floor also has soft spots.
Annnnnd in photo #2, this would be some type of breakfast nook? / laundry area? / yes, that is the refrigerator right there. Why is this all bad? 1. I already have a huge dining room. (Coming soon, guys.) 2. This place doesn’t have a laundry room, just that there laundry closet. *cringe* Cringing not because it’s a laundry closet in the kitchen, lots of people have that in townhomes around here. I’m cringing because in that closet and in the closet on the side of it for the water heater… mouse droppings. Everywhere… (Relax friends and family – mainly Mom, this home is now under contract with the great people of Cal Cam Pest Control. No worries. #thispostisnotsponsored ha) 3. This house has ZERO storage! So better believe we built a wall there-ish (pics to come) to make a full on laundry room and storage room. WINNING.
Yep, that’s all I have of the before. I know. I’m terrible. I took a few for the listing agent because she didn’t really take any photos of the bottom unit (because seriously, it was ugly and gross and nothing compared to the lovely upstairs unit.) Then I decided to buy it and that was that. There are no photos of this unit in the MLS (multi listing system for you non real estate peeps) to help me out either.
Soooo to make you feel a little better, I’ll give you some of the DURING photos:
I PROMISE the AFTER photos are beautiful. So here’s a little tease a bit further in the remodel to make sure you subscribe!
If you enjoyed those during photos and want to know more about how I did all that (ripping up flooring, concrete counter tops, painting over wallpaper, tiling back splash) or if you just want to see the after, please let me know in the comments! And please subscribe for more! I will have a post later this week for you 🙂
